Today, we delve into the ninth sin: hiding the main idea affects the synthesis and potency of texts.

Diego López Medina highlights another “sin” in legal writing: instead of starting with our central thesis, lawyers often choose to conceal it. According to López Medina, this “strategy” hampers comprehension and effectiveness since it prevents us from arguing synthetically. In this scenario, the quality of the writings suffers, being unbalanced in the “weight”/”power” ratio. Hence, postponing the central idea in legal writing is entirely inefficient for the reader and a genuine comprehension issue.

In this context, it’s crucial to remember that the human brain seeks to optimise energy expenditure in any activity, including text comprehension.

Therefore, if our writings are not efficient in terms of “energy usage,” comprehension is likely to suffer. Consequently, delaying the exposition of the central idea diminishes the potential impact on the reader, risking the loss of their attention before reaching critical or important points.

Thus, the suspense of “hiding” our arguments until the end ceases to be strategic. The brain literally tires of making an effort to understand ideas in heavy or “diluted” arguments.

Together with WOW Legal Experience, we pledge to provide you with tools and techniques to enhance the efficiency of your legal writings, fostering conciseness and clarity from the outset.
